World No. 2 Hikaru Nakamura demonstrated his expertise in the Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Tour quarterfinals in Paris by knocking out India's Arjun Erigaisi in a nail-biting two-game classical encounter. Following a rollercoaster draw in Game 1, Nakamura seized pivotal moments in Game 2 to reach the semifinals with a 1.5-0.5 win.
Arjun, the sole Indian hopeful in the knockouts, went into the game with great expectations but could not capitalize on crucial chances. Even though there were moments of brilliance, such as a momentary lead through a knight sacrifice, Nakamura's accuracy and strategic skill were too much for him to contend with. Arjun's errors were capitalized upon by the American Grandmaster, who used his bishop pair to win convincingly.
Looking back on the match, Nakamura pointed out Arjun's aggressive play, likening it to open tournament styles that were too careless at key moments. "These children are good players, but they need to learn how to push and how to hold for a draw," Nakamura said.
With this win, India's bid for the $200,000 top prize is over, but Nakamura moves on, along with Magnus Carlsen, Fabiano Caruana, and Vincent Keymer, to the semifinals of this illustrious event.
