India and Chile have inked a historic Letter of Intent (LoI) to enhance cooperation in Antarctic research during the visit of Chilean President Gabriel Boric to India. The alliance will help enhance scientific exploration in climate change, geosciences, microbiology, and innovation, utilizing Chile's geographical closeness to Antarctica and India's well-established research stations.
The cooperation between India and Chile will include the National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research (NCPOR) from India and the Antarctic Institute (INACH) from Chile to conduct joint expeditions, share data, and promote environmental protection. Both countries also reasserted their support for the Antarctic Treaty System to maintain sustainable resource management in the polar region.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi referred to Chile as a "gateway to Antarctica" and highlighted its strategic significance in India's polar exploration ambitions. President Boric extended an invitation to Modi to visit Antarctica, highlighting the significance of peaceful scientific collaboration in the continent.
This pact supplements wider bilateral efforts, such as vital mineral collaborations, cultural exchanges, and disaster management partnerships. By this move, India and Chile hope to cement relations while contributing immensely to worldwide climate change remedies.
