The Swachh Survekshan 2025 report has brought Bengaluru into the limelight for all the wrong reasons and ranked it at number five among India's dirtiest cities with a population of more than one million. The sanitation performance of the city is still trailing behind its infrastructure dreams even though it is India's 'tech capital'.
Key Highlights:

Bengaluru placed 36th nationally and 15th within Karnataka

Lucknow, Ahmedabad, and Bhopal topped the cleanest list, while Ranchi, Chennai, Ludhiana, and Madurai formed the bottom five along with Bengaluru

Indore, Surat, and Navi Mumbai entered the top Super Swachh League for cleanliness.
Performance Breakdown:

BBMP ranked 5,642 out of 10,000 in the nationwide survey

Doortodoor collection was at 99 percent, but source segregation fell to 82 percent

27 percent hygiene in public toilets compared to 87 percent in the previous year

No sign of improvement in dumpsite cleaning
Citizen Participation & Issues:

Residential zones had 100 percent in the area of cleanliness, and market zones and waterbodies had 97 and 93 percent respectively

Activists cite poor waste treatment and lack of public sanitation as persistent issues

BBMP officials promise improvement with integrated solid waste management and debris control

Prospects:
The rankings are an eyeopener for the civic authorities and citizens of Bengaluru too. With joint efforts and augmented community participation, the city can reverse its current slide in the next survey cycle.
