The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR), forecasting a spell of light to moderate rainfall, thunderstorms, and gusty winds over the next five days. The shift in weather has brought much-needed relief from the recent heatwave, with temperatures dipping and air quality showing marked improvement.

Key Highlights from the IMD Forecast

- Maximum temperature on June 20 is expected to stay around 36°C, with a minimum of 27°C
- Light to moderate rain, accompanied by lightning and winds up to 40 km/h, is forecast for June 20 and 21, especially during evening and night hours
- From June 22 to 25, the region may experience moderate to heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and wind speeds reaching 30–40 km/h
- Humidity levels are expected to rise to 90 percent, making conditions sticky despite the cooler temperatures
- The yellow alert remains in effect through June 25, with clear skies likely to return by June 26

Impact on Daily Life

- Waterlogging has been reported in low-lying areas of Gurugram, Noida, and East Delhi, prompting drainage efforts by local authorities
- Delhi Traffic Police have issued advisories to avoid waterlogged routes and ensure safer commuting during peak rainfall hours
- The city’s Air Quality Index (AQI) improved significantly, dropping to 76 (satisfactory) on June 20 from 99 the previous day, according to the Central Pollution Control Board

Monsoon Progress and Regional Outlook

- The current weather pattern is influenced by an upper air cyclonic circulation over southwest Rajasthan and an east-west trough from Punjab to Assam
- The southwest monsoon is advancing steadily and is expected to cover remaining parts of North India, including Punjab, Haryana, and the hill states, within the next 2–3 days
- Similar yellow and orange alerts have been issued for other states, including Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh, as monsoon activity intensifies

Precautionary Measures

- Residents are advised to stay indoors during thunderstorms and avoid sheltering under trees or metal structures
- Electrical appliances should be unplugged during lightning activity to prevent damage
- Commuters should plan ahead and monitor traffic updates to avoid delays due to waterlogging and reduced visibility

Future Outlook

With the monsoon gradually setting in, Delhi is expected to experience a mix of pleasant weather and intermittent disruptions. The current wet spell is likely to ease heat stress and improve environmental conditions, but authorities urge continued caution as thunderstorms and heavy showers remain in the forecast.
