Zomato has taken a significant leap towards sustainable urban mobility by launching its first electric vehicle (EV) rental fleet in Delhi NCR. This bold initiative is set to transform last-mile food delivery and reinforce Zomato’s commitment to environmental stewardship.
Fleet Launch and Scale:
Zomato, now rebranded as Eternal, has deployed an initial fleet of 300 electric bikes available for rent by its delivery partners in Delhi NCR, with plans to expand the program nationwide.
Sustainability Commitment:
The move is a cornerstone of Zomato’s pledge to achieve a 100% EV fleet by 2030 and reach net zero emissions across its delivery value chain by 2033. Currently, about 10% of Zomato’s delivery force uses EVs, which has already helped avoid nearly 4,900 tonnes of CO₂ emissions—equivalent to planting 220,000 trees in FY25.
Empowering Delivery Partners:
The rental model offers affordable, flexible access to EVs for gig workers, many of whom do not own vehicles. This approach addresses the challenges of a decentralized workforce and supports delivery partners in reducing fuel costs.
Tech-Driven Efficiency:
Zomato has introduced a proprietary EV Portal, streamlining EV allocation and inventory management while enabling delivery partners to quickly find and rent suitable electric vehicles.
Industry Collaboration:
The launch aligns with Delhi’s vision of becoming the “EV capital” and supports government policies promoting green mobility. The initiative was inaugurated by senior Delhi Police officials and lauded by sustainability advocates.
Recognition and Incentives:
Top-performing EV delivery partners were celebrated, with some receiving free EVs from industry collaborators like Kinetic Green and Quantum Energy, further incentivizing the shift.
Future Outlook:
Zomato’s EV push is set to expand rapidly, with ongoing awareness campaigns, partnerships with EV manufacturers, and continued advocacy for better subsidies and charging infrastructure.
This launch marks a milestone in India’s green mobility journey and sets a new standard for the gig economy’s role in urban sustainability.
