Northwest India is preparing for a severe heatwave in the next six days, with the temperature in Delhi reaching as high as 42°C by April 6 or 7, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) stated. South Haryana, west Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Gujarat, Rajasthan, and western Madhya Pradesh are also expected to have scorching temperatures.
The IMD foresees a 2-4°C increase in maximum temperatures over central and northwest India during this time. This is the beginning of a more severe summer season, with temperatures above normal from April to June. Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Uttar Pradesh can expect prolonged heatwave conditions, with some regions experiencing up to 11 heatwave days.
Delhiites have been asked to keep themselves hydrated and stay indoors when the mercury goes high. IMD's warning follows increasing worries regarding climate change further intensifying heatwaves and increasing their frequency across India.
While last year being the hottest summer in 14 years, the early onset of heatwave this season promises to be a torrid summer for millions. Remain prepared and make necessary precautions to combat the heat.
