Dialogue Over Disputes: A New Era of Family Conflict Resolution Takes Root

In a firstofitskind effort towards transforming the face of conflict resolution in matrimonial and domestic cases, India has launched its first Family Mediation Training Programme for nonlegal professionals. Held at the International Arbitration and Mediation Centre (IAMC), Hyderabad, the sevenday, 70hour workshop is a bold step ahead towards communitybased, traumainformed mediation.
 
Key points:
  • Organized by Invisible Scars Foundation and IAMC Hyderabad jointly, the event was sponsored entirely under Centific's CSR initiative.
  • Thirtytwo social workers, psychologists, and police officers were trained and certified as Family Mediators.
  • Curriculum covered trauma, communication, family law, negotiation, and ethics and comprised theoretical and practical examinations.
Purpose and impact:
  • The program enables the clearing of the pendency of more than 4.91 lakh domestic violence cases in Indian courts.
  • Conflict resolution in genderbased violence (ICTRGBV), education, health, and sanitation will now be conducted by trained mediators.
  • Once resolved by mediation, disputes cannot be appealed to the courts, bringing finality and emotional closure.

  • Ekta Viiveck Verma, the initiator of Invisible Scars Foundation, emphasized mediation as a healing process, not a legal process.

Prospect
With Telangana being a model for community mediation, the plan is to expand the program at the national level through philanthropic collaborations.
