Kolkata’s beloved Lord Jagannath chariot is set to make history this Rath Yatra, rolling out on wheels equipped with tyres originally crafted for Russia’s Sukhoi Su-30MKI fighter jets. After a two-decade hunt for a fitting replacement for its aging Boeing 747 tyres, ISKCON Kolkata has successfully secured four high-performance Sukhoi tyres, creating a fascinating fusion of tradition and modern engineering.

Key Highlights

•  Decades-Long Search: The journey for new tyres kicked off in 2005 when the old Boeing 747 tyres, which had been in service for 48 years, began to show signs of wear. Finding a suitable replacement became quite the challenge after the Boeing 747 was retired from service worldwide.

•  Surprising Solution: ISKCON stumbled upon the fact that Sukhoi jet tyres, produced by MRF in India, matched the required 4-foot diameter and weight-bearing capacity for the enormous chariot. Initially, the tyre manufacturer was taken aback by the unusual request but eventually provided the tyres after confirming the chariot’s specifications.

•  Engineering Adaptation: Some minor tweaks were made to the chariot’s wheel drums and axle to fit the new tyres, ensuring a safer and smoother experience for the devotees who will be pulling the chariot.

•  Ceremonial Pace: Even though these tyres are designed for high-speed take-offs of up to 280 kmph, the chariot will glide along at a leisurely procession pace of just 1.4 kmph during the Rath Yatra.

Outlook

This innovative approach showcases the spirit of ‘jugaad’ and adaptability that is so integral to Indian traditions. The new Sukhoi tyres promise improved safety and stability, ensuring that the Rath Yatra continues to inspire faith and wonder for generations to come.
