As the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) celebrates its ninth anniversary on May 1, 2025, India is celebrating a revolutionary journey towards clean energy and women empowerment. The scheme, which was launched on May 1, 2016, in Ballia, Uttar Pradesh, aimed to offer deposit-free LPG connections to adult women belonging to below-poverty-line families with a view to replacing dirty traditional cooking fuels such as firewood and cow-dung cakes with clean, safe, and efficient LPG.

Key Highlights

More than 10.3 crore LPG connections have been given under PMUY till March 2025, benefiting directly millions of families and making kitchens in India smoke-free.

The scheme has also empowered women by minimizing their exposure to indoor air pollution, which earlier used to cause serious health problems, particularly among women and children.

PMUY has greatly alleviated the drudgery of gathering firewood, liberating time for women to gain education, work, and other productive pursuits.

The environmental advantages are a decrease in deforestation and carbon emissions, as increasing numbers of households switch from conventional fuels to LPG.

Targeted subsidy by the government of ₹300 on 14.2 kg LPG cylinder for up to 12 refills annually has reduced the cost of clean cooking fuel for PMUY beneficiaries.

The coverage of the scheme has been extended through Ujjwala 2.0, which had special provisions for migrant families and again raised the target of connections, with the target now being 10.35 crore connections.

Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, and Rajasthan are the top states in PMUY implementation, indicating the scheme's widespread penetration in rural and backward areas.

LPG per capita consumption by PMUY beneficiaries has grown continuously, signaling consistent adoption and dependence on cleaner fuel.

Effect on Daily Life

The Ujjwala Yojana has ushered in a silent revolution in the countryside. With safer kitchens, fewer health hazards, and additional time for economic and personal development, women are leading the revolution. Children, also, gain from cleaner air and better nutrition with cooking becoming safer and more efficient. The scheme has also helped in environmental protection by saving firewood and minimizing indoor air pollution.

As PMUY marks nine years, it is a reflection of the potential of focused welfare programs to change lives, drive gender empowerment, and usher in sustainable growth.
