Nollywood, Nigeria's dynamic movie industry, is on the radar of international asset managers as its worth explodes and international interest in African narratives soars. With an estimated value of $3 billion in 2023, Nollywood is set to increase more than twofold in worth to $7 billion by 2028, becoming one of the globe's most profitable developing entertainment markets.
Investment companies such as Equity Partners Limited are at the forefront, recently pumping in $50 million to co-produce high-budget Nollywood movies targeting both African and Western viewers. This injection is fueled by Nollywood's increasing production-more than 2,500 movies a year-and the sector's wider reach globally through streaming giants such as Netflix and Amazon Prime. With streaming giants increasing their African content, Nollywood movies are discovering bigger, more diverse audiences, particularly among diaspora communities and emerging markets.
The growth of the sector is also driving employment and infrastructure development, with more than a million individuals now working within the industry and increasing demand for studios, post-production facilities, and trained personnel. International alliances, including multi-year co-production agreements with Hollywood studios, are also solidifying Nollywood's international reputation.
With impressive returns-usually between 15% and 20% on dollar investment-and a healthy ecosystem, asset managers are looking more and more to Nollywood as a leading choice for diversified high-growth investment. With the world's appetite for African narratives increasing, Nollywood's blockbuster phase is yet to come.
