The Ministry of Defence and DRDO have unveiled cutting-edge indigenous defence technologies, including advanced laser-based anti-drone systems and autonomous underwater vehicles. With key contracts awarded and major defence dialogues scheduled, India’s defence capabilities witness a significant leap towards modern warfare preparedness and self-reliance.
The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), under the Ministry of Defence of India, continues to spearhead indigenous innovation with new strategic weapons and defence technologies reflecting the nation’s pursuit of self-reliance. Recent highlights demonstrate significant advances in counter-drone warfare and underwater defence systems.
A landmark development is the integration and upcoming deployment of state-of-the-art indigenous drone detection and interdiction systems by the Indian Army and Air Force. These systems utilize laser technology capable of neutralizing drones at ranges up to 2 kilometers, with future versions employing 30-kilowatt lasers boasting a 5-kilometer engagement range. This cutting-edge capability joins India alongside top global powers with advanced directed energy weapons.
In underwater defence, DRDO’s Naval Science and Technological Laboratory (NSTL) has successfully developed a new generation of man-portable autonomous underwater vehicles (MP-AUVs). These vehicles are equipped with sophisticated side scan sonar and underwater camera payloads, featuring AI-driven target recognition for autonomous mine detection and classification, drastically reducing operator workload and enhancing mission efficiency.
Parallel to technological advancements, DRDO is orchestrating key defence diplomacy with the 3rd edition of the Chanakya Defence Dialogue scheduled in New Delhi from November 27, underlining India’s focus on reforms, technological transformation and civil-military cooperation.
Also noteworthy is a major contract awarded to Paras Defence and Space Technologies for Rs 72 crore, supplying submarine optronic periscopes, enhancing India’s underwater surveillance and combat capabilities.
These developments underscore DRDO’s extensive portfolio in strategic defence systems including missiles, aircraft, rocket launchers, radar, and electronic warfare systems — all contributing to India’s robust defence posture and deterrence capabilities.
