On May 27, 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi celebrated two decades of urban transformation in Gujarat during a significant event in Gandhinagar. Speaking to a full house, PM Modi reflected on Gujarat’s evolution since the launch of the Urban Development Year in 2005—an initiative he led as Chief Minister—highlighting how the state has become a shining example of smart and sustainable urbanization in India.

To mark this important milestone, the Prime Minister introduced the Urban Development Year 2025, presenting a fresh roadmap for the cities in the state. He inaugurated and laid the groundwork for projects totaling over ₹5,500 crore, which included substantial investments in urban infrastructure, healthcare, and water supply. Additionally, more than 22,000 new homes under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) were dedicated to beneficiaries, and ₹3,300 crore was allocated to urban local bodies to enhance city development.

PM Modi also rolled out the State Clean Air Programme, stressing the need for sustainable growth and better air quality. He commended Gujarat for achieving 100% railway electrification and for its leadership in exporting advanced technologies, ranging from smartphones to metro systems. The event highlighted Gujarat’s status as a beacon of aspirational India and set the groundwork for the next chapter of urban innovation and inclusive growth.
