India is advancing its long-term space ambitions with a comprehensive roadmap to establish itself as a major spacefaring nation. Building on the Gaganyaan program—its first human spaceflight initiative scheduled for launch in early 2027—India plans to develop the Bharatiya Antariksha Station (BAS), a modular space station in low Earth orbit by 2035, followed by a crewed lunar landing targeted for 2040.

Gaganyaan has proven fundamental technologies for human spaceflight, including crew escape systems and life support modules, setting the stage for extended human space missions.
 
The Bharatiya Antariksha Station will comprise five modules, with government approval already granted for the development of the first module; BAS aims to enable longer crewed missions in orbit, foster scientific research, and consolidate India’s orbital presence.
 
The 2040 moon mission involves developing launch vehicle configurations, orbital modules, and comprehensive astronaut training aligned with mission timelines, marking India’s entry into crewed lunar exploration alongside spacefaring powers.
