In a decisive move to transform the agricultural landscape and uplift the lives of millions of farmers, the government has unveiled a multi-pronged strategy aimed at enhancing irrigation infrastructure, boosting crop yields, and ensuring sustainable income for cultivators. The announcement, made during the 79th Independence Day celebrations in Nellore, underscores a renewed commitment to rural prosperity and agrarian resilience.
Here’s a comprehensive breakdown of the latest initiatives and their potential impact on farming communities across the country.
1. Irrigation Infrastructure Gets a Mega Boost
To address water scarcity and improve agricultural productivity, the government has launched two major Lift Irrigation Canal projects:
- The Anam Sanjeeva Reddy Somasila Lift Irrigation Scheme (ASSLIS) and the Anam Sanjeeva Reddy High Level Lift Canal (ASHLLC) are set to supply water to the Atmakur and Udayagiri constituencies
- These projects come with a combined investment of Rs 1,503 crore, aimed at ensuring year-round water availability for farming operations
- Additionally, the Somasila North Feeder Canal is being widened at a cost of Rs 632 crore, expected to bring 1.5 lakh acres under cultivation in Atmakur
2. Reservoir Repairs and Water Allocation
Recognizing the importance of maintaining water storage infrastructure, the government has initiated repair works on key reservoirs:
- Somasila reservoir apron works are 32 percent complete, with Rs 1.17 crore allocated for the task
- Tendering is underway for repair works at both Somasila and Kandeleru reservoirs, with a budget of Rs 3.87 crore
- With 44.44 TMC of water available in Somasila and 16 TMCFT in Kandeleru, the government plans to irrigate 5.24 lakh acres during the current agricultural season
3. National-Level Scheme Targets Crop Yield and Income
At the national level, the Union Cabinet has approved the Prime Minister Dhan-Dhaanya Krishi Yojana:
- This ambitious scheme carries an annual outlay of Rs 24,000 crore over six years
- It aims to boost crop yields in 100 underperforming districts, directly benefiting around 1.7 crore farmers
- The rollout is scheduled for October, aligning with the rabi season, and is expected to revolutionize farming practices and income generation
4. Agricultural Infrastructure and Innovation
To support long-term growth, the government is investing in modern agricultural infrastructure:
- Under the Agricultural Marketing Infrastructure (AMI) scheme, subsidies of up to 33.33 percent are being offered to enhance storage capacity in rural areas
- The Agriculture Infrastructure Fund (AIF), with a total allocation of Rs 1 lakh crore, is attracting investments for storage, processing, and marketing facilities
- Eligible beneficiaries include farmers, FPOs, SHGs, PACS, and agri-entrepreneurs, ensuring inclusive development
5. Focus on Natural Farming and Climate Resilience
In a bid to promote sustainable agriculture, the government is encouraging natural farming practices:
- Support is being extended for certification and branding of organic produce
- Plans are underway to establish 10,000 bio-input resource centers across the country
- Additionally, 109 new high-yielding and climate-resilient crop varieties have been introduced to help farmers adapt to changing weather patterns
Key highlights from the announcement
- Over Rs 2,100 crore allocated for irrigation and canal development in Andhra Pradesh
- National scheme to benefit 1.7 crore farmers across 100 districts
- Water availability secured for over 5 lakh acres of farmland this season
- Infrastructure subsidies and credit access expanded under AMI and AIF
- Emphasis on natural farming, climate-resilient crops, and organic certification
These initiatives reflect a holistic approach to agricultural reform—one that blends infrastructure, innovation, and inclusivity. By investing in both physical assets and farmer capabilities, the government is laying the groundwork for a more prosperous and self-reliant rural economy.
