Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated a transformative ₹1,010 crore City Gas Distribution (CGD) project in Alipurduar, West Bengal, marking a significant leap forward for clean energy access and regional development. The ambitious initiative will bring piped natural gas (PNG) to over 2.5 lakh households across Alipurduar and neighboring Cooch Behar districts, along with connections for commercial and industrial users.
At a spirited public gathering, PM Modi emphasized that the project is far more than a pipeline endeavor—it is a symbol of the government’s commitment to delivering essential services directly to citizens’ doorsteps. “Through this initiative, we will supply clean and more affordable energy to households via a pipeline,” he said, highlighting the project’s role in India’s journey towards becoming a ‘Viksit Rashtra’ (developed nation).
The project also includes the establishment of 19 compressed natural gas (CNG) stations, which will provide green fuel options for vehicles and industries, further reducing pollution and enhancing energy efficiency. The CGD initiative is expected to create new employment opportunities and stimulate economic growth in the region, while ensuring a reliable, environment-friendly, and cost-effective fuel supply.
PM Modi underscored the cultural and strategic significance of Alipurduar, a region rich in heritage and bordered by Bhutan, Assam, Jalpaiguri, and Cooch Behar. He described the project as a milestone in strengthening Bengal’s infrastructure and integrating it more closely with India’s national development agenda.
This landmark investment reaffirms the central government’s focus on innovation, infrastructure, and inclusive growth, setting the stage for a cleaner, more prosperous future for West Bengal.
