The 2025 G7 Summit in Kananaskis, Canada, wrapped up with no joint agreement on Ukraine, as U.S. President Donald Trump exited early, citing Middle East tensions. His departure derailed efforts to present a unified front on Russia’s war in Ukraine, despite strong appeals from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy for increased support and sanctions.

Canada, holding the G7 presidency, pledged C$4.3 billion in new aid to Ukraine, including C$2 billion in military support and a C$2.3 billion loan backed by frozen Russian assets. However, the U.S. reportedly resisted stronger language in a joint statement, leading to a watered-down chair summary instead of a formal communiqué.

Zelenskyy, who had hoped to meet Trump, left with firm backing from Canada and Europe but without new commitments from Washington. The summit also addressed AI, critical minerals, and transnational repression, but Ukraine remained the flashpoint.
In a separate diplomatic breakthrough, Canada and India agreed to restore full diplomatic ties, ending a months-long standoff. Prime Minister Mark Carney met with Indian PM Narendra Modi to finalize the reset, signaling a thaw in relations after tensions flared in 2024 over allegations of foreign interference.

While the summit fell short of consensus on Ukraine, it marked progress in other areas and highlighted the shifting dynamics within the G7. France will host the next summit in 2026.
