Google Pay, India's second-largest UPI platform, has implemented a convenience fee for bill payments made via credit and debit cards. The fee ranges from 0.5% to 1% of the transaction value, plus GST, affecting payments for utilities like electricity and gas. This move aligns with industry trends, as competitors PhonePe and Paytm already charge similar fees. While UPI transactions directly from bank accounts remain free, the new fee structure reflects fintech companies' efforts to balance growth with sustainable revenue models. Despite these changes, UPI continues to surge, with January 2025 recording 16.99 billion transactions worth ₹23.48 lakh crore, a 39% year-on-year increase.
