The much-anticipated Gurugram Metro project officially kicks off its construction phase on September 5, 2025, ushering in a transformative chapter for the city’s transportation infrastructure. The groundbreaking ceremony, known as Bhoomi Poojan, will be conducted by Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Manohar Lal Khattar and Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini at Sector 44, near the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) office. This milestone marks the official start of a project poised to revolutionize daily commute and urban connectivity in one of India’s fastest-growing cities.
Key Highlights of Gurugram Metro Phase One
The first phase entails construction of approximately 15.22 kilometers of elevated metro rail viaduct with 15 stations designed to weave into the fabric of Gurugram’s urban landscape.
A 1.85-kilometer spur extends the metro line to connect with Dwarka Expressway, enhancing regional accessibility.
A dedicated ramp will link the metro line to a proposed depot situated in Sector 33, critical for operational management and maintenance.
The contract for this phase has been awarded to a joint venture between Dilip Buildcon and Ranjit Buildcon for ₹1,277 crore plus GST.
Machinery, including a piling rig capable of drilling foundations up to 180 meters deep, is already deployed at the site, highlighting readiness for rapid progress after the ceremony.
Construction is slated to start immediately following the Bhoomi Poojan, with site mobilization scheduled mid-September.
Project Details and Strategic Importance
The Gurugram Metro Phase One line will commence from Millennium City Centre station — which will interchange with the existing Delhi Metro Yellow Line — and extend across multiple critical sectors including Sector 45, Cyber Park (Sector 46), Subhash Chowk, Hero Honda Chowk, and further to Sector 101. This corridor is carefully planned to address the extensive commuter traffic between commercial hubs, residential zones, and key business districts.
The project carries significant strategic importance as Gurugram grapples with severe traffic congestion and rising pollution levels due to high dependence on private vehicles. With a modern mass rapid transit system, the metro is expected to:
Considerably reduce vehicular load on arterial roads.
Lower vehicular emissions, contributing to a healthier urban environment.
Provide a sustainable, eco-friendly transit alternative for thousands of daily commuters.
Strengthen the integration of Gurugram within the broader Delhi-NCR metro network.
Facilitate last-mile connectivity improvements, elevating overall accessibility for residents.
Official Preparations and Community Engagement
In preparation for the commencement ceremony, Gurugram Deputy Commissioner Ajay Kumar inspected the venue and coordinated with departmental officers to ensure seamless execution. A public meeting is planned on the university campus to engage citizens directly with this landmark initiative, emphasizing the project’s role in inclusive urban development.
Gurugram Metro Rail Limited (GMRL) is actively coordinating traffic management to minimize commuter disruption during construction. Barricading and roadworks will be implemented systematically, accompanied by utility relocations and enhanced street lighting to maintain road safety throughout the project duration.
Future Expansion and Timeline
While Phase One construction starts now, surveys for Phase Two are underway to expedite tender processes and keep the overall project timeline on track. Officials have committed to a fast-paced construction schedule to meet the city’s urgent demand for mass transit solutions.
A public rally coinciding with the Bhoomi Poojan will be organized, celebrating this infrastructural leap with community involvement, highlighting the metro as a symbol of Gurugram’s progressive vision towards sustainable and efficient urban mobility.
