The Himachal Pradesh government, led by Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, will launch a comprehensive three-month campaign against "chitta" (low-grade heroin) starting November 15 in Shimla. The initiative combines strict enforcement, community participation, and awareness efforts to wipe out the drug menace.
Himachal Pradesh is gearing up for a robust statewide campaign to eliminate the scourge of "chitta," a form of heroin that has deeply affected several regions. The campaign will officially begin on November 15 with a large anti-chitta rally in Shimla, running from the Ridge to Chaura Maidan. This event will mark the start of an intensive three-month effort involving government officials, police, educational institutions, volunteers, and citizens.
Chief Minister Sukhu emphasized that the campaign will be a people's movement, relying on community support and coordinated action from all stakeholders. A special police cell has been established to target chitta mafias, and areas with the worst drug impact have been identified for focused intervention.
At the grassroots level, drug prevention committees will be formed in every panchayat, comprising seven members each. These committees will conduct monthly meetings, generate detailed reports on drug-related activities, and collaborate with law enforcement. Educational institutions will train anti-chitta volunteers to raise awareness and monitor local threats.
The campaign balances strict law enforcement with preventive measures such as awareness programs in schools and public spaces, signaling a comprehensive strategy to reclaim the state from the drug menace.
