Prime Minister Narendra Modi and newly elected Canadian PM Mark Carney are set to meet on the sidelines of the G7 Summit, offering a chance to repair strained relations between the two nations. The meeting, scheduled during the June 15-17 summit in Kananaskis, Canada, comes after years of diplomatic tensions, particularly over Khalistani separatist issues and trade disagreements.
Carney, who took office earlier this year, has signaled a more pragmatic approach toward India, emphasizing economic cooperation and mutual respect. Modi’s participation in the G7 is expected to open discussions on trade, security, and diplomatic stability, with both leaders keen on rebuilding trust after the fallout from Canada’s allegations regarding the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar in 2023.
India has maintained that bilateral relations should focus on economic growth, urging Canada to ensure the safety of Indian diplomats and curb extremist activities on its soil. The meeting could pave the way for reviving stalled trade talks, with Canada looking to expand its economic engagement with India, particularly in technology, infrastructure, and clean energy sectors.
While no formal agreements are expected, the tone of the discussions will be closely watched as both nations attempt to move past recent tensions and strengthen diplomatic ties.
