India has advanced to 130th out of 193 countries in the 2025 United Nations Human Development Index (HDI), marking a steady rise driven by improvements in life expectancy, education, and national income. The country’s HDI value increased from 0.676 in 2022 to 0.685 in 2023, reflecting robust progress in key areas. Life expectancy reached 72 years-the highest ever for India-while mean years of schooling rose to 6.9, and expected years of schooling climbed to 13. Gross National Income per capita surged to $9,047 (PPP), more than four times higher than in 1990.
UNDP praised India’s efforts in expanding access to healthcare and education, and highlighted the impact of targeted social programs and economic growth. However, the report also notes ongoing challenges, including gender gaps and income inequality, that require continued focus for truly inclusive development.
