The Indian government has made quality requirements for stainless steel tubes and pipes mandatory, with effect from August 1, 2025. The drive is to shut out subpar imports and boost local production. The notice, the "Stainless Steel Pipes and Tubes (Quality Control) Order, 2025," was published by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) on February 10, 2025. Goods must bear the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) mark to be made, sold, or exported under this order. Non-compliance can result in punishment such as imprisonment and ₹2 lakh to ₹10 lakh fines for second offenses. The move is a part of a broader policy drive to enhance consumer safety and promote quality production in India.
