Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while visiting Colombo, appealed to Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake to fulfill the dreams of the Tamil minority by enforcing the 13th Amendment to Sri Lanka's Constitution. The amendment, based on the Indo-Lanka Accord of 1987, is intended to decentralize power and grant equality to Tamils living in Northern and Eastern Provinces. Modi also stressed the need to hold provincial council elections to promote reconciliation.
The talks went beyond political issues, with Modi outlining a ₹2.4 billion package for social and economic uplift in Sri Lanka's eastern region. Major agreements were concluded on defense cooperation, energy security, and infrastructure, such as the Sampur solar power project and Trincomalee energy hub.
Modi reiterated India's firm support for Tamil equality, justice, and dignity in an integrated Sri Lanka. He also spoke about fishermen's livelihoods, calling for a humane policy and environmental conservation. Citing India as a firm friend during Sri Lanka's adversities, Modi was optimistic about the future of the island country and committed to ongoing support for its rebuilding.
The visit cements India's position as a stable neighbor while encouraging regional stability and inclusivity.
