India's AI revolution just accelerated, as IndiaAI Mission installed over 17,300 GPUs, one of the largest installments in the world, fueling the country's aspiration to be a global leader in AI. The feat marks a new era of local compute power, fueling startups, researchers, and large-scale AI model development.
Key Highlights:
Massive Infrastructure Drive: Over 17,300 GPUs have been installed under the ₹100 billion IndiaAI Mission alone, and 34,333 GPUs have been approved for purchase in phases one and two.
Democratization of AI Access: The new infrastructure will facilitate public-sector cloud computing, with startups, researchers, and institutions being able to train sophisticated AI models—such as large language models—within India.
Startup Support: Four AI startups like GAN.ai and Sarvam have been provided with significant GPU resources to build foundation and multilingual models tailored to India's needs.
Strategic Partnerships: Large cloud service providers such as Yotta, E2E Networks, and NextGen are leading the deployment, with continued integration into the IndiaAI compute portal for easy access.
Government Commitment: The initiative is backed by a ₹10,300 crore five-year commitment, focusing on ethical, secure, and inclusive AI innovation.
Prospects: With its AI infrastructure growing at a rapid pace, India can free itself from dependence on foreign compute resources, promote indigenous innovation, and support a new generation of researchers and AI startups. IndiaAI Mission will make India a global leader in artificial intelligence, driving economic growth and technology self-reliance.
