India’s bioeconomy has grown from $10 billion in 2014 to over $165 billion in 2024 and is projected to reach $300 billion by 2030, driven by pioneering biotechnology, robust startup ecosystems, and government-led reforms. This sector is a key driver of India’s sustainable economic growth and innovation.
India’s bioeconomy is rapidly ascending as one of the world’s fastest-growing sectors, projected to nearly double its market size to $300 billion by 2030. Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh highlighted this milestone at a recent event, emphasizing India’s initiation into the biotechnology-driven Fourth Industrial Revolution.
The growth is anchored by a transformative government strategy including the dedicated BioE3 policy and the formation of the Biotechnology Research and Innovation Council (BRIC), which has unified 14 autonomous biotech institutions to foster collaboration across research, agriculture, healthcare, and data sciences. This integrated ecosystem accelerates innovation and commercial potential in BioPharma, BioIndustrial, BioAgri, and BioResearch sectors.
Further, India’s bio-startup ecosystem has expanded remarkably, with over 10,000 startups fueling technological advancements and scaling global competitiveness. Achievements include significant ethanol blending targets, global vaccine production leadership, and robust patenting and scholarly output.
As biotechnology shapes the future of economic growth worldwide, India is positioned not merely as a participant but as a global leader.
