India’s space ambitions have reached a thrilling new milestone as the Axiom-4 mission, featuring Wing Commander Shubhanshu Shukla as pilot, marks the nation’s return to human spaceflight after 41 years. Retired Air Commodore Ravish Malhotra, a pioneer of India’s astronaut program, hailed the Axiom-4 mission as a “stepping stone for Gaganyaan,” India’s first indigenous crewed space mission slated for 2027.

Malhotra, who was part of the selection and training process for the current Gaganyaan astronauts, emphasized the immense value of Shukla’s participation in the international Axiom-4 mission. He noted that the hands-on experience aboard the International Space Station (ISS) will be invaluable for India’s upcoming space missions, providing critical insights into astronaut training, mission protocols, and life-support systems.

The Axiom-4 crew, comprising astronauts from India, the US, Poland, and Hungary, will conduct over 60 scientific experiments aboard the ISS, advancing research in human physiology, material science, and space agriculture. ISRO Chairman V Narayanan also highlighted that the mission strengthens India’s readiness for Gaganyaan and future deep-space endeavors.

Malhotra praised the four Gaganyaan astronauts as “the best fighter pilots of the Indian Air Force,” urging them to stay focused amid growing public attention. He underscored the rigorous physical and psychological training ahead, drawing parallels to his own experience during the historic Indo-Soviet space program.

As India watches Shukla’s journey unfold, the Axiom-4 mission is inspiring a new generation and reaffirming the nation’s place in global space exploration.
