Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is launching its latest radar imaging satellite, RISAT-1B (EOS-09), aboard the PSLV-C61 rocket on May 18, 2025, at 6:59 am IST from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota. RISAT-1B, featuring a state-of-the-art C-band synthetic aperture radar, will deliver high-resolution, all-weather, day-and-night imaging-crucial for agriculture, forestry, disaster management, urban planning, and national security, among others.
The launch of RISAT-1B is being expedited after recent security compromises, and its high-resolution imaging is expected to greatly enhance surveillance along India's vulnerable borders and coastline. The satellite will enable real-time intelligence for anti-infiltration efforts and disaster management, adding to India's "eye in the sky" as regional tensions rise.
This is another milestone in ISRO's ambitious schedule, with 52 satellites planned in the next five years to further increase India's space-based watching network.
