After resigning as India’s Vice President on July 22, 2025, citing health reasons, Jagdeep Dhankhar remains entitled to a suite of retirement benefits as per government rules applicable to former vice presidents who have served over two years.
Key Highlights: Financial and Residential Benefits
Dhankhar will receive a monthly pension estimated at over Rs 2 lakh, which is about 50-60% of the Vice President’s annual salary of Rs 48 lakh per annum as decided in the 2018 Budget.
He will have the lifelong use of a Type VIII government bungalow, rent-free, at a location of his choice anywhere in India. The government covers electricity and water bills for this residence.
Facilities include a government-provided car along with a driver for official and personal use.
Support Staff and Communication Facilities
Dhankhar will be assigned two Personal Assistants (PAs). In addition, his wife will receive a private secretary for assistance.
Secretarial support includes a private secretary, an additional private secretary, and two peons.
Telephone and other communication facilities akin to those available to Members of Parliament will be available at his residence.
Travel and Medical Privileges
Free air travel and rail travel across India are granted for official purposes or personal use.
Comprehensive medical facilities, including a private doctor, are extended to Dhankhar and his family.
Additional Amenities
The former Vice President is entitled to government-supplied furniture, household appliances, and two mobile phones to facilitate official and personal communications.
An office expense allowance of Rs 60,000 monthly is provided to meet administrative costs.
Dhankhar’s resignation came unexpectedly on the first day of the Monsoon session, and though citing health concerns, the move has elicited political speculation. Nonetheless, his entitlement to generous post-service privileges remains intact, ensuring his continued comfort and dignity as a former constitutional dignitary.
