In a major defense and diplomatic development, Namibian Air Force Commander Air Vice Marshal Theofilus Shaende met Indian Army Vice Chief Lieutenant General N.S. Raja Subramani in New Delhi on steps to enhance cooperation between the two countries' air forces. The top-level meeting is a new chapter in the emerging India-Namibia defense cooperation with a special emphasis on military training, capacity building, and strategic cooperation.
Key Highlights:
Strengthening Defense Relations: The summit was aimed at strengthening bilateral defense relations, especially in the fields of military training, technical skill building, and strategic coordination of the air forces of the two countries.
Training Cooperation: India has long been dedicated to training Namibian Air Force officers. India has since 1996 had an Indian Air Force Technical Team deployed in Namibia to train helicopter pilots and increase technical know-how.
Equipment Support: India has donated Chetak and Cheetah helicopters to Namibia, further enhancing defence ties and enabling on-hand training and operational capacity building for the Namibian Air Force.
Strategic Dialogue: Both of them explored increasing areas of cooperation to encompass joint exercises, exchange of experience, and enhanced technology sharing, as part of India's overall outreach to African defence partners.
Broader Bilateral Engagement: The recent visit is a sequel to a series of high-level visits and bilateral commission interactions and is a testimony to the multi-dimensional nature of India-Namibia relations encompassing trade, education, health, and now robust defence relations.
