India has made a firm step forward in pursuit of attaining air superiority with the go-ahead given to the indigenous Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) project. The ambitious project will revolutionize the Indian Air Force (IAF), and India will become the fourth country after the US, China, and Russia to fly fifth-generation stealth fighter aircraft.
Key Highlights
Government Clearance: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh approved the AMCA programme, with the initial development cost of ₹15,000 crore, and the project is being led by the Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) in association with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and, for the first time, also extends an invitation to the private sector to participate in order to speed up development.
Private Sector Involvement: In a first-ever policy change, private Indian firms such as Tata and L&T are now allowed to bid on their own, as a group, or in alliances with international OEMs, breaking the age-old monopoly of HAL and a bid to develop a strong indigenous aerospace ecosystem.
State-of-the-Art Capabilities: The AMCA will be a twin-engine, multi-role stealth fighter with air superiority, ground attack, SEAD, and electronic warfare missions, and will be an all-weather aircraft. It will be equipped with advanced stealth, supercruise, sensor fusion, and an internal weapons bay.
Strategic Urgency: The choice comes against the aggressive backdrop of tension with China and Pakistan. Pakistan is going to start receiving Chinese J-35 stealth fighters in 2026, and China's J-20s are already being deployed along the Indian border, so indigenous fifth-gen capability is both a strategic and operational necessity.
Timeline: Prototype to be rolled out by 2028–29, series production to start by 2032–33 and induction into the IAF by 2034.
Global Offers: India is also mulling over offers from Russia for the Su-57E (with a full technology access) and the US for the F-35A, but the AMCA is the crown jewel of self-reliance and technological leapfrogging.
Why AMCA Is a Game-Changer
Aatmanirbhar Bharat: The AMCA represents India's quest for defense indigenization, using indigenous sources and minimizing reliance on overseas sources.
Technological Leap: With advanced stealth, avionics, and multi-role technology, AMCA will bring the IAF's combat fleet at par with regional challengers and future-proof the IAF's combat fleet.
Strategic Deterrence: The induction of the jet will realign the regional power balance, dissuading enemies and guaranteeing air superiority in the face of an increasingly dynamic threat environment.
This is a major step towards Aatmanirbharta (self-reliance) in the defence aerospace sector," Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said.
