Advocate Ujjwal Nikam is a name you’ve probably heard if you’ve followed any major criminal case in India over the past few decades. Now, he’s stepping into a new role as a nominated member of the Rajya Sabha, thanks to a nod from President Droupadi Murmu. Here’s why his journey matters.

A Career Built on Big Cases
Nikam made his mark as a public prosecutor, and his list of cases reads like a history of modern Indian crime. He’s the man who argued the prosecution’s side in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack trial, making sure Ajmal Kasab was brought to justice. He’s also been involved in the 1993 Mumbai blasts case, the Gulshan Kumar murder, the Shakti Mills gang rape case, and more. Over his career, he’s secured more than 600 life sentences and over 30 death penalties.

Recognition and Risks
His work hasn’t gone unnoticed—or unthreatened. After the 26/11 trial, Nikam was given Z-plus security, a sign of just how high-profile and risky his work has been. In 2016, he received the Padma Shri for his contributions to public service.

Why Parliament?
Nikam’s nomination to the Rajya Sabha is a way of bringing his deep legal experience into the world of lawmaking. He’s expected to offer a practical, no-nonsense perspective on issues like justice and national security. For a Parliament that often debates these topics, his voice could make a real difference.
