The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast an early onset of the southwest monsoon over Kerala, on May 24-25—nearly a week before the usual June 1 date. It would be the earliest monsoon onset in the Indian mainland since 2009, when it arrived on May 23. As per the IMD's latest bulletin on May 20, atmospheric as well as oceanic conditions are leaning towards the onset of the monsoon.

The monsoon in Kerala usually comes on June 1 and reaches India till mid-July, being agriculturally and water-supply crucial. The more-than-normal rainfall is also forecast during season 2025 by the IMD, eliminating the risk of El Niño, which generally reduces rain. The pre-monsoon onset is expected to make southern states such as Tamil Nadu and Karnataka receive rains, with heavy rain and thunderstorms forecasted in the coming days.

Mumbai and other parts of Maharashtra continue to be on yellow alert for pre-monsoon rains and windy weather. Pre-monsoon monsoon guarantees relief from heat but also requires preparedness against localized waterlogging and floodings.
