India’s mango export landscape is undergoing a dramatic shift, with Kesar mangoes overtaking Alphonso as the country’s top mango export. Known for their hardiness and longer shelf life, Kesar mangoes have surged in popularity, particularly in the United States, now India’s largest mango market.

The rise of Kesar mango exports

Between April 2024 and January 2025, India exported mangoes worth $24.97 million to the US, surpassing the UAE for the first time.

Kesar mango exports to the US totaled $4.63 million, significantly outpacing Alphonso, which recorded $2.85 million in the same period.

The Gujarati diaspora has played a key role in boosting Kesar’s demand, favoring its rich flavor and resilience over Alphonso’s delicate nature.

Why Kesar is winning the export battle

Kesar mangoes have a longer shelf life, making them more suitable for international shipping.

Improved air cargo and cold chain logistics have facilitated smoother exports, reducing spoilage risks.

Trade agreements and relaxed phytosanitary regulations post-pandemic have further boosted Kesar’s global reach.

Market impact and future outlook

Kesar’s dominance is not limited to the US; it has also gained traction in Saudi Arabia, the UK, Canada, Germany, Kuwait, Oman, and the Netherlands.

Alphonso faces growing competition from other varieties, including Yemeni mangoes, which offer similar premium quality at competitive prices.

With India’s mango exports continuing to expand, Kesar’s reign as the leading export variety is expected to strengthen further.

As Kesar mangoes cement their position in global markets, their affordability and durability make them the preferred choice for international consumers.
