KL Rahul showed plenty of grit on Day 3 of the first Test against England, guiding India to 90 for 2 by stumps. His unbeaten 47 has given India a 96-run lead heading into a crucial fourth day at Headingley.

Here’s what happened:

India started their second innings under pressure after England posted 465, thanks to a near-century from Harry Brook and a confident 106 from Ollie Pope. Jasprit Bumrah was the pick of India’s bowlers, finishing with five wickets and keeping the deficit manageable.

The Indian openers had a tough time early on. Yashasvi Jaiswal was dismissed for just 4, but KL Rahul found an able partner in debutant Sai Sudharsan. Together, they put on 66 runs and helped settle the nerves in the dressing room.

Rahul looked in complete control, mixing solid defense with some lovely drives. He didn’t let the overcast conditions or the occasional drizzle get to him, and his calm presence was exactly what India needed.

Sudharsan chipped in with 30 before Ben Stokes got him out, but by then, India had a decent platform. Shubman Gill joined Rahul at the crease and saw out the rest of the day.

With a lead just shy of 100 and Rahul still looking solid, India will be hoping to push on and set England a tough target.

Day 4 should be interesting, especially if Rahul can keep going and the middle order steps up.
