Preparatory to the challenging five-Test series against England, which will start on June 20, Team India is set to embark on a new journey sans two of its modern greats—Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. Both the legends quit Test cricket last month and have left an enormous vacuum in the team's leadership and experience.
All-rounder Shardul Thakur, who was recently recalled to the Test side on the back of a brilliant Ranji Trophy campaign, gave his opinion on the retirement of the duo. "They are the most experienced players in the game, but it's a personal decision. It comes when they feel they can't contribute or push the format the way they used to," Thakur told RevSportz. That sense of security which was given by the seniors was acknowledged by him but he also realized that the team now has a good mix of youth and experience.
With Ravindra Jadeja being the most experienced player currently, Thakur urged the youngsters to take the opportunity and make their own legacy. "The tour will test everyone, with new challenges, including leadership challenges. It's a new challenge, but we have the talent," he stated.
The team's transition is already in progress, with some of the new players such as Yashaswi Jaiswal, Dhruv Jurel, and Abhimanyu Easwaran already being part of the senior team in England. Newly appointed captain Shubman Gill will be the likely leader of this new-look team, as India embarks on its World Test Championship journey outside the country.
