Amazon has launched its first-ever water replenishment project in the Yamuna River watershed, aiming to combat water scarcity and groundwater depletion in New Delhi. The initiative, announced at Amazon’s inaugural Water Dialogues 2025, is expected to restore over 400 million litres of water annually, benefiting local communities and ecosystems.
1. Project Overview and Implementation
The project will rehabilitate existing water infrastructure, including check dams and ponds.
New water-saving structures such as percolation pits and recharge shafts will be constructed.
Vegetation planting around these structures will help prevent erosion and improve soil moisture.
2. Strategic Partnerships and Collaboration
Amazon is working with Hasten Regeneration, a social enterprise specializing in ecosystem restoration.
Arpan Seva Sansthan, winner of India’s National Water Award 2023, will assist in groundwater recharge efforts.
Clear Water Dynamics, a Bangalore-based water engineering consultancy, is providing technical expertise.
3. Addressing Delhi’s Water Crisis
New Delhi faces severe water management challenges, with declining groundwater levels affecting residents and businesses.
Amazon’s initiative aligns with its commitment to return more water to communities in India than it uses in its direct operations by 2027.
The project aims to maximize direct benefits to Delhi’s water security, ensuring sustainable water availability.
4. Future Outlook and Expansion Plans
Amazon plans to scale up its water conservation efforts, expanding similar projects across India.
The initiative is expected to set a precedent for corporate-led environmental sustainability.
