In a significant move to expand quality education for children of Central Government employees, the Union Cabinet has approved the establishment of 57 new Kendriya Vidyalayas (KVs) across 17 states and Union Territories. This decision, which continues the government's commitment to educational accessibility and uniformity, will also create thousands of employment opportunities, catering to the increasing demand for well-structured schooling infrastructure.
Key Highlights Of The New KV Expansion
The total estimated budget for setting up these 57 KVs is approximately Rs 5,862.55 crore over nine years, covering both capital expenditure (Rs 2,585.52 crore) and operational costs (Rs 3,277.03 crore).
Out of the 57 schools, 20 are planned in districts currently without any KV despite having considerable central government employee populations.
The new additions include 14 KVs in Aspirational districts (areas targeted for development by NITI Aayog), four in Left-Wing Extremism (LWE) affected regions, and five in North Eastern and hilly areas.
These KVs will follow the National Education Policy 2020 by incorporating Balvatikas, pre-primary foundational classes preparing children from an early age.
Strategic Importance Of The Expansion
This expansion is aimed at addressing the growing number of central government employees and their educational needs, ensuring that children have access to a standardized curriculum under the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS) system. The initiative particularly focuses on underserved and strategically significant regions to promote inclusive growth and educational equity.
Impact On Students And Employment
With each KV expected to enroll around 1,520 students, this initiative will benefit over 86,000 students nationwide. It will also generate more than 4,600 teaching and non-teaching jobs, thus boosting local economies and education quality. Additionally, the construction and allied services related to the new KVs will create employment opportunities for skilled and unskilled workers.
Background And Future Prospects
Kendriya Vidyalayas, renowned for providing quality education and a uniform syllabus based on NCERT guidelines, currently operate 1,288 schools including three abroad. This announcement follows the earlier approval of 85 new KVs in December 2024, reinforcing the government’s sustained efforts to extend the KVS network.
With this expansion, the government under Prime Minister Narendra Modi continues to emphasize strengthening the education ecosystem, especially in regions with growing administrative demands, catering to a diverse student population across India.
