The Indian Air Force (IAF) plans to acquire 800 medium-range swarm unmanned munition systems capable of launching swarms of drones for precise strikes beyond 350 km. These systems will boost IAF’s capabilities in autonomous targeting, saturating enemy defenses, and rapid strike options.
According to recent reports, the IAF has projected a requirement for 800 swarm unmanned munition systems (SUMS) aimed at enhancing long-range precision strike capabilities. Each system will comprise a swarm of at least 20 drones that can be launched rapidly to loiter over designated targets more than 350 km away for at least 30 minutes. These drones will autonomously detect, identify, and prioritize stationary or moving hostile targets.
The swarm approach is designed to overwhelm enemy air defenses and radar systems, providing flexible, quick strike options against command and control nodes and infrastructure. The Ministry of Defence’s request for proposals specifies fixed-wing platforms powered by hybrid jet engines and batteries, capable of carrying a minimum of 30 kg ordnance along with advanced sensors, electronic countermeasures, and secure communication suites.
The drones will operate up to altitudes of 16,000 feet, capable of launch and recovery from varied terrains, supporting the IAF’s push for greater autonomous warfare and distributed lethality. Delivery of these systems is anticipated over the next 48 months with phased induction for operational readiness.
