A new UN report reveals that the world's glaciers are disappearing at a record pace, with the majority not expected to endure this century. The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) highlights that the past six years have seen the fastest rate of glacier retreat on record, and 2022-2024 was the largest three-year loss of glacier mass in history.
This alarming trend threatens water security of 2 billion people who are reliant on glaciers for freshwater, agriculture, and hydropower. Melting glaciers also contribute to rising sea levels that can lead to the displacement of nearly 900 million people living in coastal regions. Regions like the Alps, Andes, and Himalayas are particularly vulnerable.
On the first World Day for Glaciers, scientists urged action on climate now to preserve these vital "water towers" and avert cascading impacts on people and ecosystems.
