Meta has unveiled intentions for "Project Waterworth," an ambitious undersea cable project spanning over 50,000 kilometers (31,000 miles) that will connect the United States, South Africa, India, Brazil, and other destinations. The project will assist in boosting global connectivity and support the growing demands of artificial intelligence (AI) applications.
The cable will be a 24 fiber-pair system, the longest of its kind upon completion. It will incorporate new burial techniques to provide protection against natural disasters and human activities that have the effect of destroying existing cables. Meta's investment in this multi-billion-dollar project serves to underscore its aim to build its technology infrastructure outside of social media applications.
The project is one of a string of attempts by tech giants to invest in underwater cables to ensure stable data transmission and boost their artificial intelligence services, which are increasingly requiring enormous amounts of data transmission
