In a massive crackdown on organized loot, Guwahati police have seized metal scrap worth Rs 12 crore from three dumpyards at Birubari. The drive that began on a complaint of scooter theft led the investigators to a series of scrapyards where stolen items were systematically dismantled and warehoused.
The raid was launched late last night and continued up to the morning hours, and the police have seized 2,000 kg of copper, 7,000 kg of brass, 1,000 kg of mixed iron, 2,500 kg of motor parts and AC condensers, and two batteries, senior police officials said. The seized goods are valued at Rs 12 crore.
Hajo's Montu Ali scrapyards were reported to have attracted the attention of the police after locals reported suspicious activities, such as the arrival of cars late at night and overnight noises. The police also suspect the operation to have an interstate gang connection because the stolen materials were being unloaded in Delhi and other states, they said.
The owner of the dumpyard is on the run presently, and a manhunt has been initiated. Police are further probing to find out the extent of the racket and their accomplices.
