Attempts to clinch a mini trade deal between India and the US have been put on the backburner, and no agreement was reached on the August 1 target date. The fifth round of talks in Washington did not produce any outcome, and a US delegation is now going to fly to India in midAugust to talk.
Key Highlights:
-
US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick announced August 1 as the final deadline for titfortat tariffs
-
Indian products may face up to 26 percent additional tariffs, targeting textiles, leather, and drugs
-
India resisted American pressure to cut tariffs on agricultural and dairy products
-
Negotiations are still centered on market access for products, with sensitive industries such as cars remaining outstanding
Strategic Outlook:
Both nations target closing the first half of a bigger Bilateral Trade Agreement in September–October. Indian exporters, on the other hand, expect tariff headwinds, as negotiators bargain for a more balanced as well as WTOfriendly format.
