Visakhapatnam begins 2026 with a major administrative overhaul as the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) reorganises its structure. The city now operates through ten zones instead of eight, with zonal offices functioning independently from January 1. The move aims to improve efficiency, decentralise governance, and strengthen service delivery for residents.
Visakhapatnam, popularly known as the City of Destiny, has welcomed the New Year with a significant administrative restructuring. The Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) has expanded its operational framework from eight zones to ten, effective January 1, 2026. This reorganisation, approved by the state government, is designed to decentralise governance and enhance responsiveness to local needs.
GVMC Commissioner Ketan Garg announced the changes during a video conference with zonal commissioners, directing that all ten zonal offices begin functioning independently from the start of the year. The commissioner emphasised the importance of systematic transfer of files and records to avoid misplacement and ensure smooth operations.
The restructuring reflects the city’s growing population, expanding urban footprint, and increasing demand for efficient civic services. By creating additional zones, authorities aim to bring administration closer to citizens, reduce bottlenecks, and strengthen accountability.
