American Pacific Corporation (AMPAC), a subsidiary of NewMarket Corporation, announced today that it will make a large capital investment of up to $100 million to expand its ammonium perchlorate production capacity, which had previously been authorized by AMPAC’s Board of Directors on April 15, 2025. This production expansion is needed to support increasing demand for solid rocket motors from U.S. military and space launch program customers.
This investment will be used to build a new production line at AMPAC’s facility in Cedar City, Utah, which will increase its ammonium perchlorate capacity by more than 50 percent. This increased capacity will support U.S. defense and space programs, as well as allied nations' space programs. The expanded ammonium perchlorate production project is scheduled for completion in 2026, subject to the new production project being authorized by NewMarket’s board of directors.
“This investment is a result of conversations with our customers about building solid rocket motor manufacturing capacity to meet current and predicted global growth in missile production and space launch,” said Kris Griffith, AMPAC President. “This expected AMPAC investment, which is in addition to investment by our commercial partners, is an example of our investment commitment in support of very significant national security initiatives.”
AMPAC is the largest manufacturer in North America of performance additives for solid rocket motors, with a history of participation in space launch and national defense programs that spans over 60 years. AMPAC was purchased by NewMarket in January 2024, further expanding NewMarket’s exposure to mission critical industrial sectors.
