India is really feeling the heat this week, with temperatures soaring to some of the highest levels the country has ever seen. From Rajasthan to the Northeast, people are doing their best to cope as the mercury keeps climbing.

Here’s what’s going on:

Rajasthan’s Shri Ganganagar hit a jaw-dropping 49.4°C, the highest temperature in the country so far this year. Other cities like Churu and Jaisalmer weren’t far behind, both topping 47°C.

Delhi has been especially tough to handle, with a “real feel” of nearly 52°C thanks to brutal humidity and actual air temperatures above 45°C. The city is officially in the “extreme danger” zone for heat-related illnesses.

It’s not just the usual hotspots. Even places like Arunachal Pradesh’s Itanagar saw record June temperatures, and the heatwave stretched into Assam and Meghalaya.

The India Meteorological Department has put out red and orange alerts across several states, warning people to stay indoors during the hottest parts of the day and drink plenty of water.

The main reasons for this heatwave are clear skies, strong sunshine, and dry winds. The monsoon, which usually brings relief, has been delayed this year.

There’s some good news: the IMD says thunderstorms and rain are expected to arrive in North India by June 15, which should finally bring some relief.

In the meantime, officials are reminding everyone—especially kids, the elderly, and those with health issues—to take it easy and watch out for signs of heat exhaustion.
