In a historic move, leading social media sites have joined hands to address the propagation of false news on the internet. Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube have launched a joint effort to introduce sophisticated AI algorithms to identify and flag fake news. The effort entails more stringent content moderation rules, stronger fact-checking collaborations, and an easy-to-use reporting mechanism for dubious posts. Pop-ups will be added to guide users in identifying potential fake news. This integrated strategy is meant to cut by a large extent the spread of disinformation, which studies have found spreads six times faster than factual information on social media. The firms insisted on their support for free speech while encouraging a more reliable online space.
