India's ambitious bid to host the 2036 Summer Olympics, with Ahmedabad as the proposed host city, is in for a hard fight with Qatar formally entering the bidding contest along with other competitors like Turkey, Indonesia, and Chile. It makes the contest even more heated for what could be India's first-ever Olympic Games.

Key Highlights: India's Bid Status and Infrastructure

India officially submitted its letter of intent to the IOC Future Host Commission on October 1, 2024, following a delegation led by Indian Olympic Association president PT Usha holding ongoing talks with the IOC in Lausanne, Switzerland.

Ahmedabad, along with nearby cities like Gandhinagar, Bhubaneswar, Mumbai, Pune, and Agra, form part of a proposed multi-city hosting plan that includes the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Sports Enclave, set to meet Olympic standards for world-class venues.

The Union Government, backing the bid, plans to enhance sports infrastructure nationwide, elevating facilities to international standards to ensure readiness.

France has committed to technical assistance to India's bid by Franco–Indian cooperation, providing experience from the Paris 2024 Olympics.

Challenges and Concerns

The IOC has expressed concerns regarding governance issues and doping controls in India, which pose hurdles for the bid’s smooth progression.

Though plans were revealed for Ahmedabad, the IOC has not received any official notification of a completed host city choice, pointing to uncertainties within Indian Olympic administrative arrangements.

Qatar, which has more than 95% of sporting infrastructure already established and an excellent record in hosting events such as the 2022 FIFA World Cup and 2019 World Athletics Championships, is providing stiff competition.

Strategic Outlook

India is hoping to leverage its enormous youth population of over 600 million to validate the social and cultural legacy of the Games. The inclusion of traditional sports like kabaddi, kho-kho, chess, and yoga in the Olympic program is being suggested to incorporate distinct flavor and Indian roots into the event.

Further enhancements in hosting international events, including bids for the 2028 World Athletics U20 Championships, should further enhance India's credentials.

In sum, India's Olympic ambitions in 2036 are at a crossroads, and the government and Olympic authorities must respond to governance issues and rally support quickly to take on Qatar's head start bid and match it on the international arena.
