OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, is set to deepen its presence in India by establishing two new offices in Mumbai and Bengaluru. This expansion builds on its New Delhi office opened in 2025, underscoring India’s importance as a hub for artificial intelligence development and deployment.
Speaking at the India AI Impact Summit 2026 in New Delhi, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman emphasized that India’s rapid AI adoption, thriving tech ecosystem, and skilled workforce make it a strategic location for the company’s global growth. The new offices will focus on enterprise partnerships, research collaborations, and workforce upskilling, aligning with India’s “Digital India” and “AI for All” initiatives.
This move also complements OpenAI’s broader push in India, including collaborations with leading institutions such as IITs and IIMs, and partnerships with Tata Group to build sovereign AI-ready infrastructure.
