Pune is bracing for a wet and stormy Thursday as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issues an orange alert, warning of very heavy rainfall across the city and surrounding ghat regions. The alert follows the formation of a wellmarked lowpressure system over the eastcentral Arabian Sea, drawing in moistureladen winds and intensifying monsoon activity across Maharashtra.
Key Highlights:
-
Ghat areas of Pune, Satara, and Raigad are under red alert, with potential for extremely heavy rainfall and thunderstorms.
-
Wind speeds may reach 40–50 kmph, especially in elevated and coastal zones, raising concerns over tree falls and power disruptions.
-
Over 70 mm of rain is expected in short bursts, particularly during early morning and late evening hours.
-
Schools may be shut in highalert zones as a precautionary measure.
-
The IMD has also flagged risks of waterlogging, landslides, and traffic snarls, urging residents to avoid nonessential travel.
-
Rainfall is likely to persist through the weekend, though intensity may ease slightly from Friday onward.
The monsoon, which arrived in Pune nearly two weeks ahead of schedule, has already caused flooding in parts of Baramati and Indapur. With the system strengthening, authorities are on high alert to manage potential disruptions.
Residents are advised to stay indoors during peak rainfall, unplug electrical devices during storms, and monitor local advisories for updates.
