Google CEO Sundar Pichai, celebrating 20 years with the tech firm and his 53rd birthday, has offered some advice for young people who want to make their mark in the fast-changing world of today: find smarter people to work with. Speaking in an interview with AI researcher Lex Fridman on the Podium VC podcast, Pichai spoke of his own journey from humble beginnings in India to the top of one of the world's most powerful companies.

Pichai reiterated that his own development was driven by working with peers who tested him and pushed his skills and pushed him out of his comfort zone. "At different points in my life, I've worked with people who I felt were more capable than me. Put yourself in a position where you're working with people who you feel are testing your skills. That's how you improve. Put yourself in uncomfortable situations. I think a lot of times you'll be surprised at yourself," he cautioned.

He also stressed listening to one's heart, and not just the brain, when choosing a career. "If you like what you do, it's much easier, and you're going to get the best out of you," Pichai said, noting that it is going to be tough to find out.

Reflecting on his own childhood, Pichai recalled not having the essentials, and that influenced his appreciation for the ability of technology to change. He encouraged young people to seek out opportunities that challenge and fascinate them, citing humility, a growth mindset, and constant learning as the keys to long-term success.
